Poland (2018)

Ruda Śląska and Katowitz

During the last part of our trip to Poland we went to Ruda Śląska, where the mother of Nathalie’s father lives. This place is only a few kilometres away from Zabrze and is a little closer to Katowice. In Ruda Śląska we ate a small fish restaurant: fried fish with chips, surówka (a kind of Polish salad) and of course Jabłko Mięta.

In Katowice our main destination was the Silesia Museum. But before we got there, we had to walk through the city and saw a lot of things, like a flea market, picturesque side streets, oversized apartment blocks and artistic buildings and monuments. It was easy to see how Katowice is both a typical Eastern Bloc city and, at the same time, with the holding of many international events, has many new buildings. This makes the city quite unique.

The museum itself was probably the best we have ever seen. It had several galleries, but also very well staged historical events, which were not reproduced with very long texts, but with replicas and soundtracks. Unfortunately, it was not allowed to take pictures in the museum. After we had looked at all buildings with contents, we were allowed with the museum tickets also to visit the observation tower, which was the tower of an old mine. From there, one could overlook the whole Katowice.

After the very long museum tour we only wanted to go back to the city and just have something to eat. We found a citizens restaurant in a shopping mall… so far nothing special. But when we looked at the menu board, we noticed something: Here we had the burger “Kevin”! But we didn’t want to eat it with jam and cookies on it, so we ordered normal burgers.

With Katowice the last trip to Poland was also over and after that we went back to Germany. On the way there was even an accident shortly before us, because only about 50 meters in front of us a truck retreated too early and took several cars with it. We saw that the whole trunk of the car in front of us was destroyed and everything was spread all over the highway. Luckily we were still behind it with enough distance and could avoid the accident. By chance there was a tow truck on the scene, which stopped to help and the passengers of the crashed cars could get out of their cars unharmed. In Germany on the way to Hagen Nathalie’s parents let us out in Weimar. In the following photo you can see what souvenirs we bought. Besides a Hard Rock T-Shirt for me and a top and a handbag for Nathalie, we also bought stuff for friends and my parents. This includes a glasses case, a red handbag, the charcoal soap, a pack of chocolate bars and a bottle Jabłko Mięta.
